Karaoke’ing with the Boyz

Filed under: music — Ten @ 3:56 am

Whoa, now.

Last night, I chanced upon this show called Don’t forget the lyrics. I was actually going to watch saved ep of Anthony Bourdain, but I saw a musical group that I loved during the 90s, Boyz II Men. So what does a girl like Ten do? Watch the entire show, of course.

And dude, it was fun.

For a few moments, I was into dating again when I heard them sing “I’ll make love to you”. I wish they sang “On Bended Knees”, too.

After the show, I was, of course, curious of their current gigs. Google is my friend. They having tours and such, but a little snippet from a college paper had me a little ticked.

“We wanted to get a group that we’re all embarrassed to love now,” she said. “We want to hear the kind of song that we had our first kiss to, or had our first slow dance to.”
says Matthew Price from UNC

That was cold. And harsh. Sure, boybands have a certain stigma. That’s because a lot of those groups that sprouted during the 90s were crap. I have unabiding dislike for N-Sync. West Life made me break out. Backstreet Boys, well, their music was crap but I used to crush on Kevin. So there. But man, Boyz II Men was awesome. Great harmonies, great music. Still awesome. So Mr. Price, there’s no need for embarrassment.

Mi, mi, mi, mi, mi, mi, mi~~

It has been decade and then some years since I’ve had proper voice lessons. Now, I’m seriously thinking of going back.

I’m not kidding. Singing (not just karaoke singing) is an excellent way to refresh the mind and body. Although I have the enthusiasm and an okay voice quality, I have a hard time with pitch. I’m one of those unlucky ones who just couldn’t get a key right even by listening numerous times. That’s why I record my voice a lot. To see if I got the correct note. And believe me when I say that I’ve been recording my voice even back when I was in grade school. (It’s a quirk.)

So back to voice lessons. I really, really want to have another go. Not because I suddenly want to pursue stage. No, siree. I just love singing. Something happens when you nailed that high note. I mean, damn. It’s satisfying.

This time, I want someone classically trained. I had a Broadway-type teacher before. We’ll see. I have to think of my current budge first. I’m in the process of car-buying and I have major trips planned for the year. Maybe I’m just in one of my phases.

I’m not well-versed in the opera world. I know recognize very few songs. Sitll, one of my great wish is to sing with an operatic voice. O’mio Babbino Caro tops my list (as one of the songs I’d sing). Love, love, love that aria. Followed closely by Schubert’s Ave Maria. I want to sing that. IN A WEDDING. Maybe my sister’s wedding. Heh.

And so she sings…

Holy mother of Moses. Charice Pempenco is only 14 years old. Damn. How come I’ve never heard of this kid before?

I don’t know how I stumbled to the youtube clip, but it was strange to find a Filipina singer in a Korean variety show. Aside from the awesomeness of this kid, I love watching the reactions of the audience members.

Now if I could learn some opera style singing and some jazz.
